NHL Awards Holtby Bishop Quick named Vezina Trophy finalists

of the , of the and are the three finalists for the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goaltender this year, the NHL announced Wednesday. Its that time of year when the NHL begins to reveal the players that are up for the leagues end-of-season awards. While we wont know the winners until June 22, well learn of a new trio of finalists for each award over the next 10 days.Leading off with the Vezina, which is voted on by the leagues general managers, there is bound to be a little controversy with the finalists.Quick, who was a finalist for the Vezina in 2011-12, was 13th among all starting goalies (min. 41 appearances) in save percentage (.918), one of the more widely cited stats when it comes to evaluating goalies. He was second in the Western Conference, but distantly so to of the who had a .924 mark. For reference, the league average save percentage was .915 this season. Heres a look at the credentials of all three finalists:Ben Bishop, Tampa Bay Lightning: Despite the Lightning getting off to a slow start this year, Bishop was the picture of consistency. The big netminder made 60 starts this season, posting a 35-21-4 record with a .926 save percentage, 2.06 goals-against average Tyus Jones Jersey and six shutouts. Those latter three statistics were all career highs for Bishop, who was also a Vezina finalist in 2013-14. His goals-against average was also the lowest in the NHL. You could make a pretty good case for Bishop being the Lightning's most valuable player this season.Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals: It was a historic season for Holtby, who tied Martin Broduers record for wins in a single season with 48. He finished the season with a .922 save percentage, fifth best among all primary starters in the NHL. He also logged a 2.20 goals-against average and had three shutouts. Holtby finished fourth in Vezina voting last season, but appears to be the favorite heading into the awards show. He helped the Capitals earn the Presidents Trophy with the NHLs best record and GMs have shown they put a lot of weight on wins. Though that can be an overrated stat for an individual, Holtby unquestionably was a big reason the Caps had the leagues best record this year.Jonathan Quick, : Though he may have been a controversial selection, theres no doubt that Quick was a large part of the Kings succe s this year and that this was a resurgent season for Quick himself. His 40 wins were second among all goalies, while he also made a league-best 68 starts this season. He also posted that .918 save percentage and 2.27 goals-against average. Over the course of the regular season, Quick also picked up five shutouts, which included the 41st of his career. He surpa sed Frank Brimsek and John Vanbiesbrouck for the all-time shutouts record by an American-born goalie. When looking at potential snubs, Crawford is probably near the top of the list. The Blackhawks had a bit of a down year in a lot of ways, but Crawford helped keep them afloat during some of the tougher times. He led all goalies with 41 or more starts with his .926 save percentage while also playing in the toughest division in the league this season.Other goalies that may have a gripe would be a pair of seasoned veterans. helped key the succe s, which included more wins than the club had ever accrued in franchise history. He also led the NHL in even-strength save percentage, which can be Jaren Jackson Jr. Jersey a particularly helpful indicator in a goaltenders succe s at stopping pucks. Luongo also had an absurd .930 shorthanded save percentage. Without Luongo, theres no chance the Panthers win the Atlantic. The other would be who practically carried the New York on his back for much of the season. He put up a .934 save percentage at even strength to go along with a .920 mark overall. The Rangers had a somewhat middling season, though, even though The King kept them in the hunt for home ice until the last few weeks of the season. Its always interesting to see where these votes go and the debate they bring about, but this looks like it is Holtbys award to lose.
